The Patapsco Female Institute first opened in 1834.  The Institute taught Maryland's upper class girls ages 12-18 until public
schools emerged in the 1860s. The students studied natural sciences, such as botany, as well as history, languages, music and
art.  The school closed in 1890, after which time the building served as a hotel, private residence, a WW I convalescent home, a
summer outdoor theater and a nursing home.  Later, the ruins were stabilized in a historic preservation effort.

Today, the preserved ruins of the Greek Revival structure are open for tours and serve as a beautiful setting for weddings and
other special events. It also serves as an open-air theatre during the summer months.
